THEORETICAL MODEL
Birdsall Business Value Calculation (BBVC) Model
ABSTRACT
As a product manager for over twenty years, I have used many of the published models and have experienced the limitations of the known models first hand. In addition, I have faced the challenges of prioritizing backlogs of product features and defending my prioritization methodology to passionate and sometimes aggressive stakeholders. In 2009, I developed my own prioritization model, which I evolved and eventually published on my website in 2016 for other product managers to use. My prioritization model is called the Birdsall Business Value Calculation, or BBVC. The BBVC addresses three primary dimensions of the product work: (a) ability to implement the work successfully and sustainably, (b) customer value and willingness to pay for the feature, and (c) the implementation team’s excitement to create and the innovativeness of the feature. In addition, the BBVC considers (a) implementation risk, (b) global impact, (c) company priority, (d) revenue and cost savings, (e) innovativeness, and (f) team effectiveness, which makes this framework unique from the current, popular frameworks. The calculation framework and use of relative sizing allows product managers to quickly calculate the business value of an epic or user story, which then allows the product manager to sequentially prioritize the product work in minutes.
